THE CONSORZIO DEL BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO MOURNS THE LOSS OF “THE MASTER” GIULIO GAMBELLI
EXEMPLARY GUIDE FOR MANY PRODUCERS
The Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino expresses its bereavement and condolences for the decease of Giulio Gabelli who “was a point of reference for many decades transmitting to many producers his ideas on wine-making and the need to produce good wines and always improving them. Giulio also knew how to diffuse the concept of quality of wines at a moment – such as at the end of the 60s and in the 70s during which quality was not yet taken for granted as it is now.”
Between Giulio Gambelli and the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino there has always been a close connection. For three decades Giulio Gabelli would visit all the estates together with the staff of the Consorzio, to taste wines and he would comment and give advice as to how to improve the quality. “The visit would take place in spring and he had a rare gift of perceiving the characteristics of the new wines, discovering their almost imperceptible nuances of taste and smell. Under his supervision the qualitative level of Montalcino wines increased greatly reaching the level of quality it has to-day.”
As the Consorzio likes to emphasize “Giulio Gambelli was a great master for Montalcino, because like the best masters he didn’t teach anything, but by his example he managed to diffuse his ideas. The producers of Montalcino owe a lot to Master Giulio and to his contribution in the growth of the vines and wines sector of this territory”.
